Attendance

School hours for regular instructional days will be from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.  A student will be considered tardy when arriving at homeroom/1st period after 8:30 a.m. Due to supervision and safety reasons, students are not allowed on campus before 7:50 a.m. Students who arrive between 7:50 a.m. and 8:20 a.m. should report to the cafeteria (if eating breakfast) or directly to their morning location if not eating. Students will not be allowed to enter any other part of the building unless they are given permission by a staff member.

Attendance - NCPS Board Policy 4400

Attendance in school and participation in class are integral parts of academic achievement and the teaching-learning process.  Through regular attendance, students develop patterns of behavior essential to professional and personal success in life.  Regular attendance by every student is mandatory.  The State of North Carolina requires that every child in the State between the ages of 7 (or younger if enrolled) and 16 attend school.  Parents and legal guardians are responsible for ensuring that students attend and remain at school daily.  To be counted present, a student must be in attendance at least one-half of the school day.  Student chronic absence is a risk factor for adverse outcomes.  Student chronic absence differs from both truancy and average daily attendance.  Student daily attendance is the percentage of students present in a school each day.  Student truancy measures unexcused absences only.  Student chronic absence refers to missing so much school, for any type of absence – excused, unexcused, disciplinary – that a student is at risk of falling behind.  To track rates of student chronic absenteeism accurately and consistently for North Carolina students, the following definition is established: (1)"Student Chronic Absentee” is a student who is enrolled in a North Carolina public school for at least 10 school days at any time during the school year, and whose total number of absences is equal to or greater than 10 percent of the total number of days that such student has been enrolled at such school during such school year; This definition applies to all students enrolled in a school, including those who have not reached the compulsory attendance age, as well as those who have reached or exceeded the compulsory attendance age.

EXCUSED ABSENCES

When a student must miss school, a written excuse signed by a parent or guardian must be presented to the school within 3 days of the student’s return to school. Students will place the written excuse in the Written Excuse box located in the Student Services office and sign the log recording the submission. Absences due to extended illnesses (5 or more consecutive absences) require a statement from a physician. An absence may be excused for any of the following reasons:

1. personal illness or injury that makes the student physically unable to attend school;

2. isolation ordered by the State Board of Health;

3. death in the immediate family;

4. medical or dental appointment;

5. participation under subpoena as a witness in a court proceeding;

6. observance of an event required or suggested by the religion of the student or the student’s parent(s) with written approval from the principal. Excused absences for religious observance must not exceed five days each academic year.

7. participation in a valid educational opportunity, such as service as a legislative or Governor’s page, with prior approval from the principal;

8. pregnancy and related conditions or parenting, when medically necessary; or

9. visitation with the student’s parent or legal guardian, at the discretion of the superintendent or designee, if the parent or legal guardian (a) is an active duty member of the uniformed services as defined by policy 4050, Children of Military Families, and (b) has been called to duty for, is on leave from, or has immediately returned from deployment to a combat zone or combat support posting.

Any absence not meeting the requirements of an excused absence will be an unexcused absence. In the case of excused absences, out-of-school suspensions, and absences under G.S. 130A-440 (for failure to submit a school health assessment form within 30 days of entering school) the student will be permitted to make up his or her work and tests.  (See also policies 4110, Immunization and Health Requirements for School Admission, and 4351, Short-Term Suspension). The teacher will determine when this work is to be done. The student is responsible for finding out what assignments and tests are due and completing them within the specified time period.

Excessive Absences

Class attendance and participation are critical elements of the educational process and may be taken into account in assessing academic achievement. Students are expected to be at school on time and to be present at the scheduled starting time for each class. The principal shall notify parents and take all other steps required by G.S. 115C-378 for excessive absences. If a student whose total number of absences is equal to or greater than 10 percent of the total number of days that such student has been enrolled at such school during such school year for a semester or year-long class; the principal or a committee established by the principal shall consider whether the student should receive credit for the course.

Arrival

Parents are to utilize the driveway at the front of the school and follow all signs and directions of staff members. The front door entrance will be utilized by all students for entering the school. All visitors will enter through the front door, and be prepared to present a photo ID upon request.

Dismissal

Car riders will be picked up on the side of the building by the cafeteria (Glover Park side). If any car rider cannot be picked up by 3:45 p.m., a parent/guardian should call the front office to make other arrangements.

Check-In

Any student arriving at school after 8:30 a.m. must sign in through the office prior to reporting to their homeroom teacher.  The student will be given an admission slip and allowed to go to class.   Excessive tardiness to school will affect eligibility for PBIS rewards and incentives. Students will begin receiving discipline referrals upon their 10th tardy and will be assigned 1 day of  ISS for all subsequent late arrivals for the remainder of the year. Students are responsible for asking their teachers about missed assignments.

Check Out

A student may leave school before the end of the school day if a parent/guardian, or other authorized adult, personally comes to school to check the student out of school. Students must be checked out using the computer located on the counter in the front office. An officially authorized adult is one listed on the student’s information card as a mother, father, guardian, or as an emergency contact.  The adult will be asked to present a picture ID to office staff at the time of checkout. Parents are expected to make every effort to schedule appointments for students outside of school hours. You will not be allowed to check your student out after 3:10 PM. Students are responsible for any missed work due to early departure.

Tardy to class

Students who arrive late to class without a pass will be assigned a discipline referral and consequence.
